Industrial, municipal, and agricultural sectors face escalating environmental and regulatory pressures due to the discharge of wastewater laden with high concentrations of nitrogen and phosphorus—pollutants that severely degrade aquatic ecosystems and biodiversity. Conventional treatment methods often fail to meet evolving regulatory thresholds. Simultaneously, fossil fuel dependency in the energy and transportation sectors drives alarming levels of CO₂ emissions, contributing to global climate change and threatening carbon neutrality targets. The plastic industry exacerbates ecological degradation, with Europe alone generating 26 million tonnes of plastic waste annually, of which 80% contributes to marine pollution. Moreover, industries struggle with the lack of scalable, cost-effective solutions that align with circular economy mandates, leaving vast volumes of carbon and waste underutilized. These interlinked challenges demand integrated, high-efficiency solutions capable of addressing wastewater contamination, GHG emissions, and non-biodegradable material accumulation while complying with tightening global sustainability frameworks.
Algbio develops microalgae-based biotechnologies to address critical environmental challenges through sustainable solutions for wastewater treatment, carbon capture, and the production of renewable bioproducts. In Algbio’s bioreactors (Raceway Ponds), microalgae are cultivated to remove up to 95% of pollutants, such as nitrogen, phosphorus from industrial, agricultural, and municipal wastewater, while simultaneously capturing CO₂ emissions from industrial sources or the atmosphere. This dual functionality improves water quality and reduces greenhouse gas emissions, supporting a circular economy. The harvested algal biomass is processed into biofuels. These biofuels are ASTM-compliant, cost less than conventional biofuels, and require no engine modifications, making them ideal for aviation, marine, and transportation applications. Additionally, residual biomass is combined with plant-based additives to create algal bioplastic granules and filaments, which are ISO tested, biodegradable, and free of petroleum-based polymers. Operating a 3-ton production facility in Istanbul, Turkey, Algbio has demonstrated its scalable solutions through pilot projects, showcasing significant improvements in wastewater treatment and carbon capture efficiency. With TPE and PCT patent-pending technologies, Algbio is driving innovation in renewable energy and sustainable materials to achieve carbon neutrality and environmental protection.
