infrared.soft is a startup company that specialized in Infrared Thermography, Computer Vision and Machine Learning fields. infrared.soft has developed a software module that can detect the failures on Photovoltaic (PV) panels by using infrared thermal image analysis. This software module can be integrated to both mobile and desktop platforms . It is tested and verified by using an Android thermal camera attachment in a PV test field. infrared.soft is planning to improve the existing software module by improving an efficient Artificial Intelligence model that either detect the potential failures and estimate the expected failures.

Problem

The PV cells are susceptible to damages caused during production, transportation, installation or maintenance which can result in a condition that is commonly referred to as “hotspots” where a number of cells in a module become a heat sink. This phenomena is not visible with naked eye, but can easily be detected with infrared cameras. Thus thermographic inspections are an essential task in inspection of solar power plants and they should be repeated periodically, failures must be recorded and carefully tracked in order to plan and execute preventive and corrective actions. The common application is that an individual walks among the PV arrays, holding an expensive IR camera, observing thermal images displayed on small LED screens which are hard to see under the bright sun and taking notes in the meantime. This process is both expensive and hard. There is common approach to use drones for the same purpose, but identifying hotspots from above the ground does not eliminate the need for actually going to the module that is identified.

Çözüm

Our approach actually aims at supporting, if not eliminating, the infrared camera expert by introducing state of the art image analysis and Machine Learning algorithms into this heavily human-dependent process. The solution is to capture the thermal images in a systematic manner and submit them to the inspection of a software application that has the capability to analyse these images, identify the individual modules and detect the hotspots if they exist. The functionality offered by this application is not only limited to hotspot detection, but also keeping records of the hotspots over the time, so that traceability over the lifetime can be established as well as establishing a physical asset inventory of a power plant. For different use cases such as on-site or off-site analysis, there will be several applications all of which depend on the core hotspot detection service. As of today, an Android app has already been developed as an MVP and tested under real site conditions.
