Laska is a high-tech company that upcycles end-of-life tires with its innovative, environmentally friendly, and sustainable production approaches and brings them into the economy as high-added value raw materials which are carbon black and renewable fuel.

Problem

The waste tire problem keeps the whole world under a massive threat. There occur at least 1.5 billion waste tires worldwide annually. The number of these in Turkey is nearly 25 million. Although the service life of the tire varies depending on driver habits and road conditions, it is an average of five years in Turkey. In other words, since the tire is a product with a limited lifespan, waste tires constantly appear. The growth rate of the number of waste tires is 1%. These tires cause both environmental and economic problems. We can begin with environmental problems including hazardous emissions, polluted resources, and diseases. Firstly, hazardous emissions are a big threat to the planet. Waste tires are one of the major sources of CO2 emissions whether they are burned or stockpiled. Burning just 1 ton of waste tires reveals approximately 450 kg of toxic gases. Secondly, polluted resources are another threat to the planet. Pollutants emitted from tire burnings and fires are carried over long distances through the air. As harmful compounds, they pollute the air, also contaminate water and soil resources. It means that we are in one-on-one contact with waste tire-based pollutants everywhere. Thirdly, waste tires stacked in open fields are great habitats for disease-carrying mosquitoes, different bacteria, rats, and snakes. Especially, mosquitoes carry serious diseases including malaria and dengue. A single waste tire can be a breeding habitat for more than tens of thousands of disease-carrying mosquitoes. According to the statements of the World Health Organization, 800.000 people die every year due to diseases caused by mosquitoes. Economic problems are derived from traditional production methods of our products. We obtain our recovered carbon black and renewable fuel which are normally obtained from fossil fuels by traditional production methods by using waste tires. In this way, we prevent two economic problems. Costly production is the first economic problem. Carbon black is used as a raw material or additive in different industrial areas, especially in the rubber industry. Every year more than 13 million tons of carbon black is getting produced. More than 99% of this product is obtained by the combustion of fossil fuels. To obtain 1 kg of carbon black, 2.5-liter crude oil must be combusted. Therefore millions of tons of fossil fuels are getting burned to produce 13 million tons of carbon black annually. This is the traditional production method and it is very costly and dirty. And secondly, the extraction of fossil fuels is another environmental but also economic problem. Fossil fuels are major resources being used in the energy sector, transportation sector, chemical industry, or in industrial combustion practices. However, the dirty production and extraction methods of fossil fuels lead to serious problems. The air, large lands, and water resources are polluted by drilling and mining operations for fossil fuel extractions. Besides the pollution it creates, this fossil fuel extraction is a costly process.

Solution

We supply greater efficiency and productivity in waste tire management with the help of our patentable technology. In this way, we recover maximum resources leading to a circular economy and creating huge economic, environmental, and social impact. We convert an entire tire into different outputs with high yields. Firstly, we obtain renewable fuel and carbon black. After the enrichment process, we put these two products on the market. Our solution is based on four main points including high technology, sustainability, circular economy, and reduced carbon footprint. 1. High Technology: We realize our commitments with the use of high technology, developed upcycling techniques, and various enrichment processes. With our techniques we decompose waste tires in just a few hours, the dissolution of said tires in nature takes thousands of years. Also, our high technology and efficient production line significantly reduce production costs. 2. Sustainability We obtain our products by evaluating waste tires instead of using fossil fuels. In this way, using sustainable resources instead of fossil fuels we reduce both dirty practices and high costs in the production of valuable products. 3. Circular Economy With the circular economy approach we adopt, we turn waste tires into raw materials and bring them back to the economy as high-added-value raw materials. In this way, we eliminate the negative effects of waste tires on the environment. Also, we obtain our carbon black and fuel not with dirty and costly methods caused by fossil fuel use, but with clean and cost-effective methods. 4. Reduced Carbon Footprint: Our main products are alternatives to fossil fuel-based products. Customers of conventional fossil fuel-based products are at a serious disadvantage due to the dirty practices and large carbon footprint of fossil fuel use. With our environmentally friendly products, our customers will be able to avoid these disadvantages. It is also possible to reduce their carbon footprints in this way.
