Yugen’s first product, POMECO, transforms pomegranate peel waste into sustainable bio-leather through patent-pending technology and is now commercially ready. Designed for versatile applications across industries such as fashion, automotive, and interior design, Pomeco directly contributes to lowering emissions across industries. Offering full customization, it ensures customers can meet their aesthetic standards and expectations while making ethical choices without compromise.

Problem

The climate crisis is intensified by the textile industry, which contributes 10% of global carbon emissions, 92 million tons of waste annually, and 20% of global water pollution. Leather production further aggravates environmental damage, using 3.8 billion animals each year. The conventional leather and synthetic material industries are heavily reliant on animal products and petroleum-based materials, which contribute to significant environmental harm. This includes high water usage, toxic chemical processes, and large carbon footprints. At the end of their lifecycle, these materials contribute to microplastic pollution, compounding the problem. Additionally, industries such as automotive and fashion are pressured to find sustainable alternatives to reduce their environmental impact and meet increasing consumer demand for eco-friendly products. Meanwhile, agricultural waste is a rising issue, with Turkey alone producing 62 million tons annually—much of it either incinerated or buried, further accelerating biodiversity loss and carbon emissions. Agricultural biomass offers immense potential to replace petroleum-based products and address waste management challenges. Together, these factors underscore the urgent need for sustainable solutions in both the leather and textile industries.

Solution

POMECO addresses a major pain point in the automotive, fashion, and furniture industries: the need for sustainable, circular materials to reduce environmental impact. Synthetic and animal-based leathers contribute to pollution and deforestation. To address pressing environmental and waste challenges, POMECO was developed as a bio-based, patent-pending leather alternative made from upcycled pomegranate peel biomass—a lignocellulosic, highly bioactive material. Notably, 50% of pomegranate peel remains as waste after juice production. By incorporating agricultural waste into the circular economy, POMECO not only reduces waste but also offers a sustainable, eco-friendly substitute for traditional leather, minimizing the environmental footprint of the textile industry while maintaining the necessary durability and visual appeal for automotive interiors, fashion products, and furniture design.
